The Schism Of David
King David is generally regarded as the man who was after God’s own heart when in fact he was a separatist and a master politician who looked only after his own interests and the interest of his own people - the Jews - the members of the clan of Judah. After the death of King Saul, David was crowned king by the Jews in Hebron - their ancient and original capital. The eleven tribes of Israel refused to acknowledge David as legitimate king and they remained loyal to the dynasty of King Saul. 2 Samuel 2:4,8-10 irrefutably proves that the Israelites rejected David and that they remained loyal to Ishbaal [Ishbosheth] the son of King Saul:
“Then the MEN OF JUDAH [the Jews] came to Hebron and there anointed David KING OVER THE HOUSE OF JUDAH…Meanwhile, Abner son of Ner, the commander of Saul’s army, had taken ISHBOSHETH son of Saul and brought him over to Mahanaim. He made him king over Gilead, Ashuri, and Jezreel, and also over Ephraim, Benjamin and ALL ISRAEL. Ishbosheth son of Saul was forty years old when he became king OVER ISRAEL, and he reigned two years. The HOUSE OF JUDAH however FOLLOWED DAVID.”
The crowning of David established David on the throne of Judah not Israel. Only the Jews accepted David as their king. All other tribes of Israel rejected David and they recognised the dynasty of King Saul. King David ruled in Hebron for seven years and six months [2 Samuel 2:11]. The war raged between the HOUSE OF DAVID [supported by the Jews] and the HOUSE OF SAUL [supported by the eleven tribes of Israel]. The war was long and bloody:
“There was a long war between the HOUSE OF SAUL and the HOUSE OF DAVID. But David grew stronger and stronger, and the house of Saul weaker and weaker.” [2 Samuel 3:1].
When Abner, Ishbosheth’s general defected, King David eventually defeated the ELEVEN TRIBES and asserted his authority OVER THE WHOLE ISRAEL. However, the ELEVEN TRIBES OF ISRAEL never really supported David nor did they recognise the hegemony of the Jews. They served David because of their military defeat but looked forward to a day when they could throw off the yoke of David from off their shoulders. The opportunity came when Absalom, the son of David, looked for a way to overthrow the rule of his own biased and unrighteous father. Absalom was deeply hurt with the whole episode between Amnon [David’s oldest son] and Tamara [Absalom’s sister]. Even though Amnon raped his own sister, David did absolutely nothing about it. After Absalom took things in his own hands, David punished Absalom. The eleven tribes however gave their sympathy to Absalom and they gave him their military support. The WHOLE ISRAEL - everyone except the Jews - gathered behind Absalom and the revolution took place. Absalom was crowned king in Jerusalem and even David’s former friend Hushai gave his support to Absalom recognising that Absalom was YAHWEH’S ANNOINTED and that he had the SUPPORT OF ALL ISRAEL [2 Samuel 16:18]. 2 Samuel 17:11 also shows that Absalom had the support of ALL THE ISRAELITES from DAN to BEERSHEBA. That is, from the most southern part of Israel to the most norhtern part. Absalom crossed the Jordan River with the army of the WHOLE ISRAEL [2 Samuel 17:24]. The battle was fought in the Forrest of Ephraim. Twenty thousand Israelites were killed that day and with them also their king Absalom [2 Samuel 18:6-14]. Sometime later, Sheba the son of Bichri, from the tribe of Benjamin - the same tribe from which King Saul was - urged the Israelites to continue the resistance against the Jews who supported David. 2 Samuel 20:1-2 says that he blew the trumpet and said to the people:
“We have no part in David, neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: every man to his tent O ISRAEL. So EVERY MAN OF ISRAEL went up FROM AFTER DAVID AND FOLLOWED SHEBA the son of Bichri: BUT THE MEN OF JUDAH CLAVE UNTO THEIR KING.”
A clear statement that even after Absalom was killed THE WHOLE ISRAEL walked away from David and would not give their support to a separatist monarch. Eventually the Israelites were weakened and were in no position to dictate terms to the Jews. David through force IMPOSED HIS WILL OVER THE WHOLE ISRAEL and ruled with an iron hand. The eleven tribes however only artificially supported David and were always on a watch - hoping one day to depose David. The opportunity presented itself when Solomon’s son Rehoboam succeeded his father on the throne. The Israelites regained their independence and established their own kingdom and practiced their own religion in the country of their own. Two northern tribes - Benjamin and Levi - later merged with the tribe of Judah and were consequently absorbed by the Jews. The Ten Tribes however never joined their union but they maintained their independence until 721 B.C.E. when their kingdom was conquered by Assyria.
David And The Place Of His Own Choosing
We have already seen that according to Moses, God was going to choose a place of worship in one of the tribes of Israel. It was also plainly demonstrated that the chosen place of which Moses spoke was in fact SHECHEM in EPHRAIM with its two adjacent mountains GERIZIM and EBAL. It was not until some 700 years later that David conquered Jerusalem from the Jebusites and transferred his throne from Hebron to Jerusalem. Henceforth Jerusalem became the capital city of the Jews and the city itself became known as the City of Zion and the City of David - that is, Davidsburg. David was very ambitious king and he could not live with the fact that the tribe of Ephraim [through Joseph] was chosen nor could he live with the fact that the CENTRAL SHRINE where all the tribes were expected to make their annual pilgrimages should be in the territory of ISRAEL. So David determined in his mind to establish HIS OWN CITY - the CITY OF DAVID - as the most important city and the city where all the tribes would come and worship. It is not difficult to demonstrate from the Bible itself just how David accomplished this shrewd and wicked scheme.
From the days of Joshua until the day the Temple was built in Jerusalem on Mount Moriah, the TABERNACLE which Moses constructed in the desert and its ALTAR were always in the territory of JOSEPH - that is, either in Ephraim or Manasseh. It was in Shechem, then Shiloh, then Nob, and finally it was situated on a high place in GIBEON. The Israelites permitted the building of altars in many other cities and they also permitted their priests to sacrifice on these altars but they observed all their annual festivals and sacrifices in the chosen place - where the TABERNACLE which Moses constructed and its ALTAR in front of the entrance was situated. The Jews on the other hand forbade the erection of altars anywhere except on Mount Moriah - the place of David’s own choosing. Here is how David accomplished his scheme and actually established Jerusalem as the chosen city and Mount Moriah as the only place where it was later legal to offer sacrifices. After fortifying Jerusalem and firmly establishing himself on the throne of Judah, he immediately significantly increased already his sizeable harem - or should I say BROTHEL, and constructed his luxurious palace. He also constructed a TENT in which he purposed to place the Ark of the Covenant. 1 Chronicles 15:1-3 gives us the following information:
“And David made him houses in the city of David, and PREPARED A PLACE FOR THE ARK OF GOD, AND PITCHED FOR IT A TENT…And David gathered all Israel together TO JERUSALEM, to bring up the ARK OF YAHWEH UNTO HIS PLACE WHICH HE HAD PREPARED FOR IT.”
Then in 1 Chronicles 16:1-3 we are told:
“So they BROUGHT THE ARK OF GOD, and SET IT IN THE MIDST OF THE TENT THAT DAVID HAD PITCHED FOR IT: AND THEY OFFERED BURNT SACRIFICES AND PEACE, OFFERINGS BEFORE GOD. And when David had made an end of offering the burnt offerings, he blessed the people in the name of Yahweh. And he dealt to every one of Israel, both man and woman, to every one a loaf of bread, and a good piece of flesh, and a flagon of wine.”
David tried to impress the Israelites and bribe them with his gift so that they would not rebel or oppose his wicked and illegal scheme. But more importantly, by placing the Ark of the Covenant in the tent at the place of his own choosing and by presenting sacrifices at that same place, David violated two most basic and fundamental commands of the Mosaic Law. According to the text of Exodus - Moses was shown a pattern of the Sanctuary of Yahweh. He was instructed to erect the Tent of Meeting [Tabernacle] which was to consist of two apartments: The Holy Place and the Most Holy Place. He was also told to make an altar of acacia wood and overlay it with bronze. On this altar all the sacrificial rites were to be performed. On the golden altar which he was also instructed to make, the incense was to be burned perpetually. He was also to make a golden lampstand [The Menorah], as well as all sort of utensils required for the sacrificial cult. Moses also constructed the most holy object - ARK OF THE COVENANT - which was overlaid with gold and whose lead was made of pure solid gold. This Ark was to rest between two cherubim which Moses was to make of pure gold. This Ark was called the THRONE OF YAHWEH and the MERCY SEAT. It was believed that this was the very dwelling of Yahweh. The cherubim creatures were animals resembling bulls - with enormous outstretched wings and a human face.
On the Day of Atonement - 10th of the Jewish seventh month - the High Priest was to enter the Most Holy Place and sprinkle blood on the mercy seat in order to atone for the sin of his nation. Each day - morning and evening - the priests were to present a lamb as a perpetual sacrifice. This rite became known as the daily sacrifice. The Tabernacle was erected on the first day of the first month in the second year after exodus from Egypt [Exodus 40:2,17]. The Ark of the Covenant was placed in the Most Holy Place - and hid by the veil [Exodus 40:3,21]. The golden altar of incense, the shewbread table and the lampstand were placed in the Holy Place [Exodus 40:4-5]. The altar for burnt offerings and sacrifices was placed near the entrance of the Tent of Meeting [Exodus 40:6]. In Leviticus 17:1-7 we find the following clear instructions regarding the Tabernacle and its sacrificial altar:
“This is what Yahweh has commanded: Any Israelite who slaughters an ox, a lamb or a goat in the camp or outside of it instead of bringing it to the entrance of the Tent of Meeting to present it as an offering to Yahweh in front of the Tabernacle of Yahweh - that man shall be regarded guilty of bloodshed: he has shed blood and must be cut off from his people. This is so that the Israelites will bring to Yahweh the sacrifices they are now making in the open fields. They must bring them to the priest, that is, to Yahweh, at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting [where the altar was located] and sacrifice them as fellowship offerings. The priest is to sprinkle the blood against the altar of Yahweh at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting and burn the fat as an AROMA PLEASING TO YAHWEH. They must no longer offer any of their sacrifices to their goat idols [Satyrs] to whom they prostitute themselves. THIS IS TO BE AN EVERLASTING ORDINANCE FOR THEM THROUGHOUT THEIR GENERATIONS.”
By placing the Ark of the Covenant in his own tent and at the place of his own choosing - and not the Most Holy Place of the Tabernacle which Moses constructed in the desert, David was guilty of a great sin. And by presenting sacrifices on his own altar in the place of his own choosing and not in front of the Tabernacle and the altar which Moses constructed, David was guilty of BLODSHED, that is, MURDER. David and his priestly conspirators knew that Jerusalem was not the chosen place. They knew that it would take some time before they can cause the people to abandon the Tent of Meeting and numerous other shrines and eventually worship exclusively and solely at Mount Moriah, in JERUSALEM, the very place David himself chose and selected. That is exactly why he and his priests allowed the worship to continue in Gibeon at the Tent of Meeting while slowly and gradually they were establishing JERUSALEM as the central shrine and the only place of worship. 1 Chronicles 21:25-29 explicitly states that while David was worshipping and sacrificing on Mount Moriah in Jerusalem - in the new place of his own choosing - the Tabernacle Moses constructed - was actually situated in GIBEON:
“So David gave Ornan six hundred shekels of gold by weight for the place. And David built there an altar to the LORD, and offered burnt offerings…FOR THE TABERNACLE OF THE LORD AND THE ALTAR OF THE BURNT OFFERING, WHICH MOSES HAD MADE IN THE WILDERNESS, WERE AT THAT TIME AT THE HIGH PLACE IN GIBEON.”
After David transferred the Ark of the Covenant and placed it in the tent of his own making and choosing, and after he constructed his own altar for sacrifices and burnt offerings, in the place of his own choosing - JERUSALEM - he could not ignore GIBEON and cause the people to ignore it and right away worship solely and exclusively in Jerusalem. 1 Chronicles 16:1,4,37,39-40 says that David did the following:
“So they brought the ark of God, and set it in the midst of TABERNACLE THAT DAVID ERECTED FOR IT. Then they offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before God…and he appointed some of the Levites to minister before the ark of the LORD, to commemorate, to thank, and to praise the LORD God of Israel…So he left Asaph and his brothers there before the ark of the covenant of the LORD to minister before the ark regularly, as every day’s work required…and Zadok the priest and his brethren the priests, BEFORE THE TABERNACLE OF THE LORD AT THE HIGH PLACE THAT WAS IN GIBEON, to offer burnt offerings to the LORD on the altar of burnt offering regularly morning and evening, and to do according to all that was written in the Law of the LORD which he commanded Israel.”
In effect David recognised two distinct places of worship and altars - although he himself never again worshipped in Gibeon but only on Mount Moriah in Jerusalem. He did so in direct violation of Deuteronomy 12 and 14 and Leviticus 17. It was in fact at this very high place in Gibeon that Solomon himself worshipped and offered sacrifices. It was at this very place and not JERUSALEM where God actually appeared to Solomon. Please note 2 Chronicles 1:3-7:
“And Solomon spoke to all Israel, to the captains of thousands and of hundreds, to the judges, and to every leader in all Israel, the heads of the fathers’ houses. Then Solomon, and all the congregation with him, WENT TO THE HIGH PLACE THAT WAS IN GIBEON; FOR THE FOR THE TABERNACLE OF MEETING WITH GOD WAS THERE, WHICH MOSES THE SERVANT OF YAHWEH HAD MADE IN THE WILDERNESS. But David had brought up the ark of God from Kirjath Jearim TO THE PLACE DAVID HAD PREPARED FOR IT, FOR HE HAD PITCHED A TENT FOR IT IN JERUSALEM. Now the bronze altar that Bezaleel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, had made, he put before the TABERNACLE OF YAHWEH; Solomon and the congregation sought him there. And Solomon went up there to the bronze altar before Yahweh, which was at the TABERNACLE OF MEETING, and offered a thousand burnt offerings on it. On that night God appeared to Solomon, and said, SK! What shall I give you?”
The Tabernacle in Gibeon could not be ignored. It was too important a place to be ignored and suppressed overnight. Even though after David built his altar on Mount Moriah in Jerusalem and instructed the people that the new place was thenceforth the place of sacrifice and worship, the people still continued to worship at Gibeon. 1 Chronicles 22:1 clearly shows that after David finished his offerings and ceremonies on the new altar he built on Mount Moriah, he told the people that this new place was the “House of Yahweh” and Israel’s new altar for “burnt offerings:
“Then David said, This is the house of the LORD God, and this is the altar of burnt offering for Israel.”
Most people however ignored this new place of David’s choosing and continued to worship at the various local shrines in Israel and observed their annual festivals at the central shrine in Israel. Even after Solomon built the Temple on Mount Moriah most Israelites still worshipped and sacrificed at their local shrines which were located on high places. It is commonly supposed today that the Temple Solomon built was actually the most holy and the only authentic shrine which God chose. They simply do not realise that this Temple was in fact the House of Horror and Abomination from its very beginning. It was the central shrine of Judah where idolatry and sex worship was legalised by Solomon. It was the place where both male and female sacred prostitutes performed their sexual acts in order to increase the revenue of the Temple. Solomon actually built the dwelling quarters for their comfort. Josiah later destroyed these quarters and expelled the Temple prostitutes from the land. [Full details are given in my book Idolatry And Sex Worship In Ancient Israel].
David And God’s Alleged Covenant With Him
There are several biblical passages which unmistakably speak of an UNCONDITIONAL COVENANT which God supposedly made with David. God allegedly swore to David that no matter what, He would insure that David ALWAYS had a SON in order to continue David’s dynasty FOREVER. This covenant had no strings attached. Even if David’s descendants are wicked and reject God and His laws, God would still keep His oath to David and NEVER REJECT JERUSALEM OR HIS DYNASTY as He did SAUL AND HIS POSTERITY. I will begin with Psalm 89:3-4,2-23,28 and 37:
“I have made A COVENANT with MY CHOSEN, I HAVE SWORN to my servant David: your seed I will establish forever, and BUILD UP YOUR THRONE TO ALL GENERATIONS…I have found my servant David; with my holy oil I have anointed him, with whom my hand shall be established; Also my arm shall strengthen him. The enemy shall not outwit him. Nor the son of wickedness afflict him. I will down his foes before his face, and plague those who hate him…My mercy I will keep for him FOR EVER, and my covenant shall stand firm with him. HIS SEED ALSO I WILL MAKE ENDURE FOREVER, AND HIS THRONE AS THE DAYS OF HEAVEN. IF HIS SONS FORSAKE MY LAW AND DO NOT WALK IN MY JUDGEMENTS, IF THEY BREAK MY STATUTES AND DO NOT KEEP MY COMMANDMENTS, then will I visit their transgression with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes. NEVERTHELESS MY LOVING KINDNESS I WILL NOT UTTERLY TAKE FROM HIM, NOR ALLOW MY FAITHFULNESS TO FAIL. MY COVENANT I WILL NOT BREAK, NOR ALTER THE WORD THAT HAS GONE OUT OF MY LIPS. ONCE I HAVE SWORN BY MY HOLINESS; I WILL NOT LIE TO DAVID: HIS SEED SHALL ENDURE FOR EVER, AND HIS THRONE AS THE SUN BEFORE ME; IT SHALL BE ESTABLISHED FOR EVER LIKE THE MOON, EVEN LIKE A FAITHFUL WITNESS IN THE SKY.”
The Jewish redactors believed that the throne of David was invincible and that it was in fact Yahweh’s throne. 1 Chronicles 29:23 says:
“Then Solomon sat on the THRONE OF YAHWEH as king instead of David his father.”
The Queen of Sheba is said to have said these words to Solomon:
“Blessed be Yahweh your God, who delighted in you, SETTING YOU ON HIS THRONE TO BE KING FOR YAHWEH.”
Now please note 2 Samuel 7:12-16 and what God allegedly says to David:
“When your days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom for ever. I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If HE COMMITS INIQUITY, I will chasten him with the rod of men and with the blows of the sons of men. But my mercy shall not depart from him, AS I TOOK IT FROM SAUL, WHOM I REMOVED FROM BEFORE YOU. And your house and your kingdom SHALL BE ESTASBLISHED FOR EVER BEFORE YOU. YOUR THRONE SHALL BE ESTABLISHED FOR EVER.”
David’s throne was to be established in Solomon. This promise has nothing to do with Jesus it has to do with Solomon and David’s royal line through all generations. The promise was unconditional. David’s dynasty was to exist and rule forever even if some of his sons reject God and His laws and do wickedness. They would be chastised for their wickedness but the throne would not be taken away as God allegedly took it from King Saul. King Abijah, the grandson of Solomon, understood that the covenant with David was perpetual and unconditional. He did not understand it that the covenant will be one day fulfilled in Jesus but that it was rather applicable for all generations and that in every generations David’s son would rule on the throne of David. Please note what Abijah said to Jeroboam and all Israel:
“Then Abijah stood on Mount Zemaraim, which is in the mountains of Ephraim, and said, Hear me, Jeroboam and all Israel: Should you not know that YAHWEH GOD OF ISRAEL GAVE DOMINION OVER ISRAEL TO DAVID FOREVER, TO HIM AND TO HIS SONS, BY A COVENANT OF SALT?…And now you think to withstand the KINGDOM OF YAHWEH, WHICH IS IN THE HAND OF THE SONS OF DAVID” [2 Chronicles 13:4-4,8].
We have already seen that Psalm 89:34 clearly says that David’s throne would exist THROUGH ALL GENERATIONS. And now please note the final text which is actually the most powerful and amazing text which clearly shows that David would never fail to have a male descendant who would rule in Jerusalem and that Levites would never fail to execute their office through all generations. The text comes from Jeremiah 33:17-26:
“David SHALL NEVER LACK A MAN TO SIT ON THE THRONE OF THE HOUSE OF ISRAEL; nor shall the priests, the Levites, lack a man to offer burnt offerings before me, to kindle grain offerings, and to sacrifice CONTINUALLY…If you can break my covenant with the day and my covenant with the night, so that there will not be day and night in their season, THEN MY COVENANT MAY ALSO BE BROKEN WITH DAVID MY SERVANT, SO THAT HE WILL NOT HAVE A SON TO REIGN ON HIS THRONE, and with the Levites, the priests, my ministers. As the host of heaven cannot be numbered, nor the sand of the sea measured, so I will multiply the descendants of David my servant and the Levites who minister before me…If my covenant is not with day and night, and if I have not appointed ordinances of heaven and earth, THEN I WILL CAST AWAY THE DESCENDANTS OF JACOB AND DAVID MY SERVANT, SO THAT I WILL NOT TAKE ANY OF HIS DESCENDANTS TO BE RULERS OVER THE DESCENDANTS OF ABRAHAM ISAAC, AND JACOB.”
Powerful words indeed. But words which the true and eternal God never actually spoke. The first thing we know about this text is the fact that it is lacking and not present in the book of Jeremiah preserved in the Greek Septuagint Bible. Now this fact is of extreme significance. The Septuagint Bible was the official and authentic version of all the Hellenistic Jews as well as all the Hellenistic Christians and even the Church Fathers. The Greek Septuagint therefore testifies that the Hebrew text which antedates the Masoretic Text did not and could not have contained Jeremiah 33:14-26 - the very text which so powerfully states that God made an unconditional and perpetual covenant with David, his sons and the Levites. The Encyclopedia Of Early Christianity, art. Jeremiah, Book Of, says:
“The Greek text of Jeremiah is one third shorter than the Hebrew Masoretic text. JEREMIAH 33:14-26 IS MISSING, and the oracles on foreign nations [Jer. 46-51] follow Jeremiah 25. Within the section, the nations are dealt with in a different order.”
The very text which speaks of the covenant with David is missing in the Greek Septuagint Bible. The whole book of Jeremiah is strikingly different from the one preserved in the Jewish Masoretic Text. Most scholars believe that the Greek Septuagint Bible was translated from a Hebrew text which was strikingly different from the Masoretic Text which was compiled in the 6th century of the Christian Era. We have seen that the Jewish redactors really believed that Jerusalem will be secure forever. They also believed that the Temple would endure forever and that the priests would always and continually offer sacrifices on its altar. That is why they argued that the Almighty overlooked the gross sins and idolatry and evil of certain Jewish kings. In their view, the Almighty had to overlook it and could not destroy Jerusalem and its Temple and David’s dynasty because of His alleged oath to David. But there is a sure way to know that all these passages which speak of the covenant with David and the choosing of Jerusalem and the Temple and a continuous sacrificial cult in Jerusalem are actually forgeries. If God really swore to David that his dynasty would be unbroken and that there would always be a son from his linage who would rule in Jerusalem and if He really overlooked all the gross sins of certain Jewish kings in order to uphold His oath to David, then He would have continued to do so indefinitely - since His oath was FOREVER and David’s sons had to rule CONTINUALLY - in EVERY GENERATION. If all this was really true, why then do we find that at the time when the greatest religious reform was done in Judah and Israel by King Josiah - who is said to have been the most righteous king of all - God rejects the dynasty of David and actually swears that there will never be a man who would sit on the throne of David again? How could God allow Jerusalem and the Temple to be destroyed when He supposedly swore that the priests would continually and forever offer burnt offerings on the altar of the Temple? The Jewish redactors blame everything on King Manasseh. Now he was really a bad and sinful king. But at the end he repented. He was succeeded by King Josiah who supposedly put everything in order. But even if Manasseh did not repent and if he persisted in his sins and even if Josiah persisted in idolatry and phallic rites, God was still obligated to preserve the dynasty of David - since He allegedly swore that even though David’s descendants reject His Law and commands He would still not break His oath to David by putting an end to his dynasty. All this proves that the Almighty never swore to David nor did He ever choose Jerusalem and its Temple.
Shortly after the death of King Josiah, the Babylonians came and conquered Judah. They destroyed Jerusalem and its Temple. Many Jews were exiled to Babylon. Their King Jehoiachin - the son of Josiah who ruled only three months and ten days after his father’s death - was taken to Babylon as prisoner [2 Chronicles 36:6,10]. King Evil Merodah somewhat eased his burden and he was permitted to eat in the palace of the king until his death. The Babylonians appointed Zedekiah [his brother or uncle, depends whether you accept the version of Chronicles or Kings] in his place. Zedekiah ruled for 11 years [2 Chronicles 36:11] after which he rebelled against Babylon. Zedekiah was captured and taken to Riblah where King Nebuchadrezzar pronounced sentence. All his sons were killed before his very eyes and then they gorged out Zedekiah’s eyes and took him to Babylon [2 Kings 25:5-7]. Jeremiah 52:11 adds that Zedekiah remained in Babylon until the day he died.
45Jehoiachin was the last official king of Judah. If the Babylonians did not take him to Babylon, one of his sons would have succeeded him on the throne of David. But it was not to be. He died in Babylon. And God swore that none of his sons would ever rule on David’s throne. Jehoiachin is also called Jeconiah and Coniah in the Bible. In Jeremiah 22:24-30 we read:
“As I live, says Yahweh, though Coniah the son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, were the signet ring on my right hand, yet would I pluck you off; and I will give you into the hand of those who seek your life, and into the hand of those whose face you fear - the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and the hand of the Chaldeans. So I will cast you out, and your mother who bore you, into another country where you were not born; and there you shall die. But to the land to which they desire to return, there they shall not return. Is this man Coniah a despised, broken idol? Is he a vessel in which is no pleasure? Why are they cast out, HE AND HIS DESCENDANTS, and cast into a land which they do not know? O earth, earth, earth, hear the word of Yahweh! Thus says Yahweh: WRITE THIS MAN DOWN AS CHILDLESS , A MAN WHO SHALL NOT PROSPER IN HIS DAY; FOR NONE OF HIS DISCENDANTS SHALL PROSPER, SITTING ON THE THRONE OF DAVID, AND RULING ANYMORE IN JUDAH.”
With Jehoiachin or Coniah David’s dynasty comes to an end. When the Jews returned from the Babylonian captivity the monarchy was never revived again nor was there any descendant of David sitting on the throne of David in Jerusalem. What about the remarks of the Jewish redactors who said that the Holy One overlooked the gross sins of the Jewish kings so that David could always have a lamp in Jerusalem? What about the alleged oath of the Holy One to David that he will always have a son to sit on his throne - through all generations? Obviously these texts were written by those who did not know the future nor were they aware that Jerusalem and its Temple would be destroyed.
But there are those who claim that David’s dynasty did not come to an end and that it was actually occupied through all generations. This idea is known as “British Israelism” and is now propagated by several Christian organisations. In this book I will not go into all the details but will simply give several reasons why this idea and teaching is not and cannot be right. Those who believe that Queen Elizabeth II of Britain is actually a descendant of David and in fact sits on the throne of David claim that she is descended from David through King Zedekiah’s daughter who, according to them, married in Ireland. Her bloodline was then transferred to Scotland and finally to Britain. Even if it is true that British monarchs are descended from King Zedekiah’s daughter, the fact still remains that God’s unconditional covenant with David was BROKEN. This is so for several reasons. First, God swore to David that he would never lack a SON to sit on his throne. God said that He would make sure that David would always have a SON to rule on his throne. Secondly, God swore that David’s throne would NEVER CEASE TO FUNCTION IN JERUSALEM and not in Britain or somewhere else. The redactors themselves believed so and that is exactly why they claimed that God ignored the evil of David’s descendants. Thirdly, the lying pen of the scribes wrote that Israel [Jacob] actually promised that a “sceptre will not depart from Judah until the Shiloh comes.” The proponents of the British Israelism believe that “Shiloh” refers to Jesus. But according to their own theory, the sceptre was taken away from Judah by Jeremiah and planted in Ireland, then Scotland and finally Britain. By teaching British Israelism the problem is not solved but it still remains. Besides, those who teach British Israelism insist just like the Jewish redactors did and basically all traditional Christians do, that the Ten Tribes were exiled from their land in 722 B.C.E. and that not even a single Israelite soul was left behind. But I will demonstrate later that this claim is simply not true and that in fact bulk of the Israelites were left behind and were never exiled from their land.
